Prof. Em. Nils Ryum was the first one to initiate this research at NTNU, in the early 1990's
Prof. Øystein Grong has looked on the effect of Sc for grain refinement during welding.
Prof. Knut Marthinsen has looked at Sc in combination with other elements as a dispersoid former.
Prof. Hans Jørgen Roven has looked at severe plastic deformation of Sc-containing Al alloys.

Janusz Król and co-workers at the Laboratory of X-ray Diffraction at
The Aleksander Krupkowski Institute of Metallurgy and Materials Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences
are investgating Sc-containing Al-alloys.
John Vetrano at the
Material Interfaces and Characterisation Group of Pacific Northwest Laboratory and his co-workers have conducted
several investigations on Al-Mg-Sc and Al-Mg-Mn-Sc alloys over the last few years.
