I remember how did I enjoy the first time I listened to ARVINGER from mp3.com, some of the tracks that can be downloaded there (or could be in a past time) are re-edited in this album.
This band mainly combines, in a very good way, styles from the atmospheric black metal (BURZUM like) to the aggressivity of viking black metal (THYRFING, MYTHOTIN,...) always with the folk elements of pagan black metal and even female voices. Fused altogether with a very good combination of interludes that will make you unable to stop listening to this album. Guitar riffs are also very good performed with even a little solo sometimes, Hauk is a talented guitarrist but with little experience still. Djerv's vocals, on the other hand, are not bad but maybe the weak point of this album. In an album fusing so many styles it is difficult to find a clear indentity of vocals which fit perfectly the music.
Lyrics are singed in Norwegian, so it is difficult (up to impossible) for me to know what are the main topics of this album, Viking environment, obviously. Production isnīt also good, this is an auto produced demo, no Production label yet. This Auto-Producton gives this album the raw sound sometimes black metal is asking for, but sometimes you can feel the damp and leaking basement where this album was recorded.
Good melodies and instrumental work, grunty male voices and occasionaly heavenly female voices and even fiddles. An album for fans of Scandinavian Viking Black Metal, from KAMPFAR to KEKAL. Good debut album.
