"White Soul Wonderkid and Funky Chartbuster Turned Morose Superstar"
I looked through some "ultimate guide to pop music" (how many "ultimate" guides aren't there out there, claiming they're the guide?) and saw this as an "explanation" for George Michael. It's somehow suitable. Wham! - White Soul Wonderkid, Faith - Funky Chartbuster and Older - Morose Superstar. Makes sense. But I'm not getting into all that now. What I thought I'd do was to take a look at some of his "looks".
The Early Look:
Cute, innit? Kind of 70's. Probably around the age of 11/12. I can see where Andrew got the explanation "Big, curly hair, big thick steel glasses" from. And of course, "He had just one eyebrow that went from one side of his face to the other". We can't see it here, but...
The Wham! Look:
The white soul wonderkid with big hair, an even bigger smile, shuttlecocks down his trousers and those dimples... "What a kick, just a buddy and me... we had every big-shot good time band on the run boy, we were living in a fantasy..."
The Faith Look:
The funky chartbuster. Leather jackets, jeans with holes, stubble, Ray-Bans, cross earrings and bleeched hair. "I was every little hungry schoolgirl's pride and joy, and I guess it was enough for me..."
The LWP Look:
A bit darker, getting more and more drawn back, not doing interviews nor appearances in his videos. "Now today the way I play the game is not the same, now I'm gonna get myself happy..."
The Five Live Look:
"Can anybody find me somebody to love...?"
The Older Look:
The morose superstar. Short, black hair, a look that would scare the devil himself and dressed in black. Always. "Strange, baby, don't you think I'm looking older? Something good has happened to me. Change is a stranger..."
The Ladies & Gentlemen Look:
Let's go outside everyone. Not quite as down as in the Older period. "You can't keep holding it in when it's something good..." ;-)
The Songs From The Last Century Look:
Someone would still call him "morose" but I'd say he looks happier than in a long time. "Elizabeth Taylor is not his style, and even Ricky Martin's smile is something he can't see..."
The New Album Look:
...? ...
We don't know that yet, do we? I have a feeling he'll change again - as the chameleon he is... ;-)
