Department of Applied Biology

Head of The Department of Applied Biology: Tamrat Andargie

The Department of Applied Biology offers courses which capacitate students to perform researches on problems related to Environment, Ecology, Conservation of Natural Resources, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Health, Agriculture and the like. Students are given a wide variety of courses to sub-specialize themselves in any of the five streams: Ecology and Environmental sciences, Zoology, Botany, Microbiology and Parasitology, and Genetic and Molecular Biology streams.
In their stay at the department, students are expected to complete a total of 140 credits (67 compulsory major 19 elective major, 24 compulsory chemistry, and 31 general supportive credits) Most departmental courses involve practices and field work in different research laboratories and field visits.

At the end of their study, students will have all-rounded skill to design and handle researches in their stream-line and carry out multidisciplinary research on crossectional problems
Upon completing their studies, students will be awarded a "B.Sc. Degree in Biology (science). This will license them to be employed i various organizations.
Graduates will have ample job opportunities to join Biodiversity Institutes, EARO, Forestry and Medical Research Institutions, conservation areas, Food industries, Health Laboratories, Integrated Development Projects, Teaching institutions and others.
Expertise gained by taking streamlined courses in 3 rd and 4 th years would help students to focus on their interest area so that it will help them to easily prepare themselves for their graduate programs either in Addis Ababa University or elsewhere locally or abroad. The Department of Biology has a plan to launch M.Sc Programs in the coming few years.
