A selection of events in Edvard Munch’s life:
Note: Between 1624 and 1877 the capital of Norway was called Christiania. After that it was called, or spelled, Kristiania until the turn of the year 1924/1925 when the name changed to Oslo.
1863 Edvard Munch is born on December 12. at Engelhaug. He was the son of Christian Munch and Laura Cathrine Munch. The family had five children in total: Sofie (who dies at age of 15), Andreas (who dies at the age of 30) and Laura and Inger.
1864 The family settles in Kristiania (now Oslo)
1868 Edvard Munch’s mother dies of tuberculoses only 30 years old.
1880 After one year, Munch drops out of the school Christania Tekniske Skole, and starts studyingart.
1883 In the summer, Edvard Munch has his debut as an artist at the big art exhibition, Industri- og Kunstutstillingen, which was opened by Crown Prince Gustaf, with Prince Oscar and many other distinguished guests in place. In December he has another debut at the art-exhibition, Kunstnernes Høstutstilling, with the painting "På morgenkvisten".
1884 As a result of these art exhibitions, Edvard Munch meets and connects with the so-called Kristiania-bohemen (Kristiania-bohemians) with the charismatic leader Hans Jæger (Hans Jaeger) and others.
1885 Edvard Munch is for the first time in Paris. In the summer he meets Milly Thaulow for the first time while travelling to Borre in Vestfold.
