Profile
Had he played in a different era, Oly By Rise may well have been one of Norway's most-capped players
of all time. Unfortunately for him, he played in the same era as Erik Thorstvedt.
For more than a decade, By Rise was widely regarded as Norway's second-best goalkeeper, but with Thorstvedt
ahead of him in the pecking order, opportunities for By Rise were few and far between. Overall, By Rise won
25 caps for Norway, and was an unused substitute a record 54 times.
At club level, By Rise spent his entire career at Rosenborg. He made his debut as a 17-year-old, and spent
no less than 18 seasons at Lerkendal, playing a record 346 games in the top flight (the record has since been
broken by his Rosenborg teammate Roar Strand). During his time with the club,
he won seven league championship medals. He also won the cup three times, but will perhaps always be remembered for
the cup final he didn't win in 1991, when he made a pair of crucial errors against Strømsgodset that all but
lost the game for Rosenborg. Nonetheless, this game shouldn't overshadow the fact that By Rise was an excellent goalkeeper.
The closest By Rise ever came to leaving Rosenborg
was in 1988, when he nearly joined English side Southampton. A transfer fee had been agreed and By Rise had agreed
personal terms, but the move fell through when he was denied a work permit. At national level, he played only sporadically,
but he was given an extended run in goal for the Olympic team as they tried to qualify for the 1988 Games.
By Rise's international swansong came in 1994, when he was the third-choice keeper in Norway's World Cup squad.
The next season, he retired as a player and took up his new career as assistant coach at Rosenborg, where he served under
three different managers. When Åge Hareide left Rosenborg at the end of the 2003 season,
By Rise was appointed head coach of his only club. However, despite guiding the club to its 13th league title in a row
in 2004 (by the narrowest of margins - Rosenborg finished ahead of Vålerenga on goals scored), By Rise was sacked at
the end of the season. In 2006, By Rise was named assistant manager of the national team under Hareide, and remains in that job today
despite Hareide's resignation in 2008.
