Profile
A hard-working midfielder, Svein Kvia was the "engine" of the great Viking teams of the 1970s that won the league four consecutive years from 1972 to 1975. He made his debut for the Stavanger side in 1965, and soon established himself in the team. He got his international debut in a friendly against Bermuda in 1969.
At club level, Kvia won the first of his five league championship medals in 1972, when Viking topped the table from start to finish. This Viking side was loaded with talent, and won the league the next three years as well. At national team level, Kvia established himself as a regular in the Norway side in 1973. However, Norway was a sorry team at this time, evidenced by the fact that Kvia was on the losing side in almost two thirds of his international appearances - a stark contrast to his success at club level.
In 1976, Viking's championship-winning streak came to an end, but Kvia got a consolation prize as he was named Player of the Year. He won his last championship medal in 1979, and also won the cup for the first time the same year, as Viking recorded their first-ever Double. Kvia retired at the end of the 1980 season, but remained at Viking, serving the club as a director through most of the '80s and '90s, and also had a couple of spells as head coach. He passed away in 2005, aged only 57, after losing his battle against brain cancer.
