MIDI Sequence Voice Edit
|
|
THE QUESTION: " I load a MIDI song into the KN5000. I go to the track mixer screen and change instruments and volume. I have been unable to save the song with these changes to disk. Only the original song is saved. How can I change instrument voices in a MIDI song and save the new settings to disk?"
|
|
A COMMENT FROM BOB: The instrument patches are located in each track just before the start of the sequence. When the sequencer is started it resets all voicing to these settings at the beginning of the song. So it is necessary to edit the voices at the beginning of each track before the new settings can be saved to disk.

Load the MIDI song as usual and press the Sequencer Reset button. |
| Press the Sequencer Menu Button, then select CREATE. Next press STEP RECORD. | ![]() |
| At the STEP RECORD Part Select page select the track that you want to edit. | ![]() |
| This is the Step Record page for editing track 1. Press the cursor button to move the cursor one step to the right. Notice the small square cursor with a star showing at the cursor position. The star indicates that something is located at that position in the sequence. There can be several things at that same location. Move the cursor one step at a time until you see the first item at the location of the star. | ![]() |
| In the sequence I am using as an example the first item is the voice assignment of a Vibraphone for the RT 1 sound. At this point you can press any of the sound group buttons to enter a different voice for this part. Press the cursor button once again. If the vibraphone shows again at this location press the ERS button to erase that command. Be sure that your new instrument assignment is the last one shown, then press the cursor button once more to the right. | ![]() |
| The next command that shows in my example is the volume level for the voicing that we have selected above for the RT 1 sound. Use the VALUE buttons to adjust the volume level you want for this part. Then press the right cursor button again. | ![]() |
| The next item that shows in my example is the stereo positioning (panpot) for the voice we have selected. Adjust the VALUE buttons to position the part in the stereo position that you want. Then press the cursor button once again to the right. | ![]() |
| There may be a screen for Reverb and DSP Effects which you may decide to adjust. After those adjustments are made and you press the cursor again, you will see the cursor move to the right away from the Star. This is normally the start of the song sequence. These steps have edited the sound assignment for Track 1. Similar steps would need to be taken to change voicing for other tracks of the MIDI sequence. After all of the edits are completed, save your edited file to disk using a new name or disk location. Verify that all items work OK before you delete the original file. | ![]() |
| Remember that voicing or control changes can occur at any point in a MIDI sequence. These editing steps only control the way the song is started by the sequencer. If an instrument is changed midway in the song you will have to make a note of the measure where the change is located and then go to that measure to edit that change. The process of editing the sound assignment is the same as we have discussed here regardless of where in the sequence the editing is needed. |
