Rice porridge is part of Norwegian Christmas traditions. Often enjoyed for lunch, with cinnamon, sugar and butter. The game is to put an almond in the porridge, and the one who gets it on her/his plate, wins a marzipan pig or some other prize. Experienced players play the game tongue-in-cheek, that is, no one reveals that they've found the almond, but everyone pretends, with tongue firmly planted in cheek, as if to hide an almond. In our family, we have rice porridge at my place and by the time people arrive, there's a certain Christmassy feel to the place, with a decorated tree, candles and a Star of Bethlehem (or a poinsettia, if you're a botanist).
