Karlingalas is tall and red-haired, something that has always marked him out as somewhat unusual among the Elves. Although he doesn't look it, he is ancient indeed, being among the Elves who first awoke beneath the stars at Cuiviénen in the First Age of Middle-earth. Along with many of the Noldor, he crossed the sea to the Undying Lands, and returned to Middle-earth after the destruction of the Two Trees in the party of Fëanor -- and nobody has yet got an answer out of him about the Kinslaying. He lived in Beleriand until the Dagor Bragollach. At the time of the breaking of the siege of Angband he was travelling alone in the west of Beleriand, and so when Beleriand was overrun he fled not east but west to the coast.
For many years he hid in the forests until he resolved to attempt to return in secret. His only, desperate hope was to build a boat and to try to find a way back by sea. But there was to be no return for the Noldor until the mission of Eärendil and the War of Wrath, and Ossë drove the boat off course. Karlingalas has said nothing of his voyages and wanderings, and all that anyone knows is that he ended up in the land of Alfantol, from where he journeyed to the land of eGroups and made his home in Balrog Cuttings. Having brought a trombone or three with him. Ahem.
Karlingalas, along with Paganini, Morwen, Freaksaus, Sunset and Zorag, was transported from Balrog Cuttings to an alternate Castle Hare by an interdimensional rift. He decided to join the expedition to the library to find out why the people in the great hall thought Elves were legendary, but somehow ended up in the 'Mathematics' section of the library. He followed Jared and Morwen down the hidden passage to the bookstack, despite disliking Jared, and his knowledge of ancient Elvish came in handy when they discovered an inscription in Rumilian tengwar that proved that the tunnel network underneath the library was built by Elvish hands. However, these Elves had not been there for a very long time, and their powers and preoccupations struck Karlingalas as decidedly alien.
Transported by a mysterious entity to the southern border of Hyeron, Karlingalas and the others decided to simply make their way back to the castle to have words with Rabbyt over what exactly was going on, but were sidetracked when they encountered the Hyeronian Paganini. Karlingalas immediately put his foot in it by assuming that he was just their own Paganini in a funny tin outfit, but the situation was saved by Morwen's possession of the Knife of Glaneth. Karlingalas failed to distinguish himself in the attack on Zorag, and was rather discomfited by the unexpected appearance of a troubadour Balrog. He was left to look after the wounded Paganini while his companions assaulted the enemy camp, but when the others returned, they discovered that he had gone off and taken the Knife with him...
This was mysterious enough. Even more mysterious is Karlingalas' sudden and as yet unexplained reappearance in the White Tunnels below Castle Hare. He hasn't yet explained how he got there, nor what he's been doing in the meantime. It is doubtful, though, that the Count and Morwen will let this remain a mystery for long, though Warren, Sir Confused-a-lot, Adam and Rakeis are probably less concerned.
