Better dead than red
NAME: Padgin

PROFESSION: Royal guard
WORLD OF ORIGIN: Terra Hyeroniae
FIRST APPEARANCE: The Great Hall - Part One

DESCRIPTION:

Padgin is an average sized Dwarf (ie about 140cm tall and weighing about 110kg) with an auburn beard of which he is very fond. VERY fond. He gets very angry when someone calls it 'red.' In fact, Padgin gets angry quite a lot, particularly when someone remarks that he takes too much care over his appearance. For Padgin belongs to a small clan known as the Pretty-dwarves, whose clan custom is to wear all of their wealth at once. Padgin is accordingly covered in gems, jewels and precious metals, and his thick-fingered hands are covered in so many rings that he has great difficulty in bending them. Someone once valued Padgin at about a hundred and fifty thousand carats. Unfortunately, he thought the valuer said 'carrots' and bludgeoned the poor man to death with his own eyeglass, which Padgin subsequently purloined. He had to leave town shortly afterwards, and drifted into the army of Hyeron, which isn't particularly choosy. He worked his way up the ranks by a combination of hard work and violence, and is now a valued member of the Queen's personal guard. Valued at about a hundred and fifty thousand carats, that is.
Padgin has no unfulfilled grudges (he spent most of his life fulfilling them) and can now concentrate on his life's ambition, which is in line with his acquisitive nature. While not the brightest of dwarves (not in that sense, at any rate) he has a streak of low cunning and a dwarvish eye for detail. And gold.

HISTORY:

Padgin was the first of the royal guard to recover from the shock of seeing several strangers materialise in the great hall of Castle Hare, and reacted in typically belligerent style. Despite his serious reservations about the newcomers, he agreed to lead them to the library in search of knowledge that would help save Hyeron (and his pension scheme). His worst fears were justified when the spell of the library worked its evil will on them, and they were accosted by the lunatic Lord Adam.
After Morwen, Jared and Karlingalas found a way out of the main library, he, Paganini, Warren and the new arrival Rakeis, accompanied by the somewhat more placid Adam, escaped the library when Warren inadvertently broke the spell. Reluctantly agreeing to stop off at the kitchens en route to the great hall, Padgin was once again led astray by his charges, but after joining up with a random Dark Elf, the party finally arrived at the throne room to discover a revolution in progress. When he and Paganini apparently failed to justify their conduct to the Queen, they were last seen in chains awaiting the execution of their sentence for gross neglicence, treason, and anything else the Queen can think up. It is possible, though, that Padgin received a reprieve, since a Dwarf answering to his description was among the palace guard laid low by Laurie the Lumberjack's impressive vocal ability.
