The Teuncers arrive in Castle Hare

Paganini, Padgin, Jared, Morwen, Karlingalas, Warren, Freaksaus and Zorag learn of the peril facing Hare and decide to go to the Library.

The adventurers face danger both from the curse laid on the Library, and from the malevolent Lord Adam in his many guises.

Jared and Morwen, accompanied by Karlingalas, journey into the mysterious depths beneath the Castle, where they discover a being of immense power who transports them to the Hyeronian marches. They enter a deserted village and find a knife of great power, then journey up the road to Hare, only to encounter a band of knights.

Jared, Morwen and Karlingalas ally themselves with the Hyeronian knight Paganini, and promise to aid him in defeating his nemesis, the invulnerable demon Zorag the Barbarian. Jared lures Zorag into an ambush and Paganini defeats him, but is wounded. A new victim of the Rift, a Balrog named Count Tildanor, attaches himself to Morwen and the party decide to cause some disruption to the now leaderless army threatening Hyeron from the west. An otherwise successful raid on the enemy camp is marred by Morwen's mysterious disappearance...

Jared and the Count search for Morwen and eventually locate her, but feel that something about her isn't right. The unity of the group is stretched to breaking point by mutual suspicion, and matters are made worse when they learn from Paganini that Shadow Guy has appeared again. They encounter Lord Graham on their way to the Castle, and learn that all is not well there, but decide to continue on their way for a number of reasons...

Three parties - the Heroes for Hire, the opponents of the CHOKLIT mushrooms, and the Black and Red Revolutionary army of three - meet in the mysterious passages beyond time and thought and form two new groupings for two quite different adventures.

Some of those left in the Library, with the addition of rocker wizard Rakeis Traska, contrive to break the curse and escape. The party of Padgin, Paganini, Warren, Lord Adam and Rakeis take a detour to the kitchens, where they meet Morgil Pimeestara, a Dark Elf who has also fallen victim to the Rift. At Padgin's insistence, they then return to the throne room.

Sir Confused-a-lot is dispatched from Castle Hare on a quest for CHOKLIT, and the mysterious Wizard With No Name also leaves the court. They discover a Pool of CHOKLIT underneath the castle, and through a series of events find themselves working with the Committee, a group of revolutionaries devoted to overthrowing the monarchy. Led by the domineering Leila, the two travellers prepare an assault on the throne room while Arkadij, Bertram and Carlos the amnesiac wizard wait for the signal to attack...

The returning Library party gets caught in the cross-fire between the revolutionaries and the royal forces, and in the resulting chaos new groupings are formed.

Sunset leaves the others, roosts on Castle Hare for a while, then journeys to the East where he meets Meneldil the Ent. Meneldil offers to accompany him back to Castle Hare to warn the inhabitants of their danger, but both Sunset and Meneldil's Mûmak Spot vanish. The Ent falls in with a mysterious lumberjack called Laurie, and the unlikely pair (along with an unusual Orc called Hurghak) are taken to Castle Hare where a revelation is in store for Laurie.
