Death note is a story about a student who finds a notebook by coincidence, dropped by a death god, a shinigami, from the shinigami realm. It was dropped by the shinigami Ryuk, who was bored at the time. However, the notebook is special. The name that is written in the book shall die by a heart attack 40 secounds later. There is a lot of rules for it's use, but i'm not going to mention them. This student, Light Yagami, uses the Death Note to kill all the worlds criminals and make the world an utopia, with him as god.
WARNING! SPOILERS AHEAD!
However, he does not succeed.
He manages to kill the world famous detective L (Yes he IS dead :( ) in book 7, but gets killed by Ryuk, in book 12 when he gets busted. His girlfriend, Misa Amane, is a student who also got hold of a Death Note. They team up, and she survives all 12 books. (xD) It is made an Anime out of the series and three games about Death Note is also released, but most probably, Japan only. :(

L Lawliet AKA Ryuzaki/Hideki Ryuga is a Master detective that tries to capture KIRA, a mass murderer who kills criminals using a Death Note. What he doesn't know is that Light is KIRA.
Light Yagami is a student trying to kill all criminals in the world. He must know L's real name before he can kill him. He doesn't know his second name, Lawliet.
Light's girfriend. Has the ability to see a persons name by just looking at the face.
The shinigami who drops the Death Note into the human world from the shinigami realm. He is the killer of Light Yagami.
